John Peel and Sheila
The Sunday Times / 21st may 2006

VARIOUS ARTISTS John Peel and Sheila: The Pig's Big 78s Trikont US-0350

In its closing years, Radio 1's John Peel show often featured ancient 78s
chosen by the DJ's wife, Sheila, affectionately known as the Pig; here is a
posthumous selection. There's old-time Americana, crackly blues, novelty
records and exotica, genuine and fake, in the shape of an unnamed 1930
Cantonese recording and George Lewis's 1947 hula craze. South Africa's
Zig-Zag Jive Flutes offer a superbly uplifting Tom Hark, and Bradford, an
oddly elegiac 1914 tune from a Suffolk brass ensemble called Besses o'the
Barn Band, is sublimely beautiful. Both confirm Peel's ability to create
groundbreaking radio from disparate strands.
