John Peel and Sheila
The Big Pig's 78s: A Beginner's Guide
(Trikont)
Of all the John Peel memorials, remembrances and records that have been floating around in recent months this is the most moving - and the most bizarre. Focusing on the 78s that his wife Sheila would introduce on Peel's radio programme, this CD collects together a ragbag of music- hall novelties, dance-hall gems and forgotten pop hits that tickled the DJ's fancy. So we get Blue Tango by the Ray Martin Orchestra, the first record that Peel bought, alongside the rockabilly star Peanuts Wilson singing Cast Iron Arm. Add in Albert Whelan's Pass! Shoot!! Goal!!!, Ronnie Ronalde's The Yodelling Whistler and Jail House Blues by Lightnin' Hopkins and you have an awe-inspiring set.
